Summary
In the centre of Antwerp the architects’ firm S/VR designed the renovation of the head office of Ackermans & van Haaren. AvH is listed on Euronext and is part of the Bel 20. The project integrates an important historical corner site, a few stately town houses with a balcony and carriage entrance and a new construction into a striking whole in which both old and new retain their identity.
The historic buildings were renovated completely and their rich interior is now the confidence-inducing décor in which co-operation and investment is discussed.
The new construction with its enormous glass facade, set in an ingenious spider glass construction of metal tubes, contrasts radically with the historic brick and sandstone buildings. The offices are located here, all designed along a central corridor.
The parquet floors and joinery in walnut together with the soft lighting provide a warm homely feel that contrasts with the business atmosphere. The diversity of the activities of Ackermans & van Haaren is reflected in the diversity of the architecture. The visual message of the architecture is consequently also clear: here resides a company with its roots in the past but with a vision for the future.
