GHENT UNIVERSITY

Research building (block B)

Project description

It is a replacement new construction. The new building has a comparable volume to the existing buildings. The new research building is 6800 m² and accommodates offices, research laboratories, including facilities for mice, rats and pigs, a studio and a meeting point for students. The surrounding buildings can be called eclectic. The building is white referring to the clinical but will also be experienced as neutral in the environment. A verticality is opted for as a counterweight to the horizontality of the adjacent buildings. This creates a clear, simple building that nevertheless has an independence with respect to the surrounding buildings. A unity in diversity in this eclectic environment.
